Why I Disagree with “Don’t Study IT Anymore”

From three websites sharing one database to working with E-TUYS

Why I Disagree with “Don’t Study IT Anymore”

Some people say we no longer need programmers because AI can write code. But working code does not always mean the whole job is complete. Programmers and IT workers get most of the attention. I think AI can put jobs in every department at risk.

Imagine connecting three separate websites to one shared database. Each website may have its own data structure, user permissions, and business rules. You need to move the existing records, solve conflicts, and make sure all three websites can read and update the same data correctly. Getting one website to work is only part of the job.

AI may update the first website without checking how the other two use the same database tables. A change that works on the first site may break records on the second or stop the third from saving data. Someone needs to ask: Did you check all three websites?

💻 A Programmer Knows What to Question

A programmer thinks about how the systems work together. How can we move the data without losing it? Who can access each record? Do all three websites still work after the change? Why did AI choose this solution, and did it actually test the whole system?

This is what I mean when I say programmers understand the language of AI. Technical knowledge helps them see the assumptions behind an answer. Studying programming teaches people to break down a problem, understand cause and effect, and find the source of an error. These skills are still useful when working with AI.

That is why I disagree with telling young people not to study IT or programming. AI may change the work. We still need people who can use it well, question its output, and understand the whole system.

📂 My Experience in Foreign Trade

I work in the foreign trade department of my company. The colleague who handled our investment incentive certificates left, and no replacement was hired. When we reviewed the files, we found several problems. Some certificates were close to their deadlines. Some investments were not complete.

We worked through these files with AI. In my experience, AI was excellent at using the E-TUYS system. It directly helped us carry out the work in the system. We revised certificates, applied to close completed files, and cancelled the certificate for an investment that had not been completed. It felt like working with a colleague who had been doing this job for forty years.

Was everything perfect? No. Some documents were missing, and we supplied them later. Using E-TUYS well did not mean every file was already complete. We still had to follow the work, provide the missing documents, and spend time getting things done.

🤖 Other Departments Are Changing Too

When people discuss AI and jobs, they often focus on programmers and IT workers. But jobs in every department may change. At my company, the person who handled investment incentive certificates left, and no replacement was hired. With AI, our foreign trade team took on that person’s work. This happened outside software development.

The position was empty, but the work remained. We revised the certificates, followed the applications, and supplied missing documents. AI helped us take on the work. We still had to follow the process and give it our time.

🎯 Using AI Well Means Understanding the Work

Using AI well starts with explaining the job clearly and checking the result. A programmer must check that all three websites work together. A foreign trade employee must know what is complete, what is still waiting, and what needs to happen next.

We should encourage young people to learn their field and make AI part of that learning. AI can do powerful work. A person still needs to ask questions, challenge its choices when necessary, and take responsibility for the result.

What changes are you seeing in your department? Which tasks has AI helped you take on, and where did it still need your knowledge? Share your experience in the comments.
